Jijel boasts numerous public utilities, structures, and institutions, with the University of Mohamed Seddik Benyahia standing out as a prominent scientific establishment that has evolved significantly over the years
Higher education in the Wilaya of Jijel began in 1986 as an attachment to the University of Constantine. In 1988, the Higher School of Basic Sciences was established through an executive decree, offering undergraduate programs in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
In 1993, the Institute of High Technicians in Public Works merged with the Higher School, further expanding its educational of ferings.
Later, the Higher School of Teachers was elevated to the status of a University by virtue of Executive Decree No. 98/221 of 07/27/1998. This transformation resulted in the establishment of four institutes within the university :
- Institute of Exact Sciences
- Institute of Technology
- Institute of Natural Sciences
- Institute of Automation
Through the Executive Decree issued on 07/22/2003, the University Center in Jijel was further enhanced and elevated to a full-fledged University status. This upgrade resulted in the establishment of four faculties within the university :
- Faculty of Science
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Management Sciences
As per the executive decree dated 02/17/2009, which amends and supplements the previous decree, the University of Jijel underwent changes in the number and specialization of its faculties. The revised structure of the University of Jijel includes the following faculties : :
- Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural and Life Sciences.
- Faculty of Sciences and Technology.
-- Faculty of Law and Political Science.
- Faculty of Economic, Commercial, and Management Sciences.
- Faculty of Arts, Languages, and Social Sciences.
With the issuance of the executive decree on October 8, 2012, the University of Jijel underwent further restructuring, resulting in the establishment of seven faculties. The revised structure of the university comprises :
- Faculty of Exact Sciences and Computer Information
- Faculty e of Natural and Life Sciences
- Faculty of Sciences and Technology
- Faculty of Law and Political Science
- Faculty of Economic, Commercial, and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Arts and Languages
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Presently, these seven faculties are divided into two university poles, namely Jijel and Tasoust. Additionally, a third pole is currently under construction in the municipality of Aouana, expanding the university's reach and academic offerings.
